About

The Aerospatiale SA 315 Lama first flew on March 17, 1969. The type was developed by combining the airframe of the smaller SE 313 Alouette II with the more powerful Turbomeca Artouste turboshaft of the Alouette III. The result was a light helicopter with extraordinary high-altitude performance — Jean Boulet flew a Lama to 40,820 feet on June 21, 1972, setting a helicopter altitude record that has stood for over fifty years.
