About

The Y-wing is a fictional starfighter from the Star Wars film franchise, appearing alongside the X-wing as part of the Rebel Alliance fleet at the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). Where the X-wing is the universal Rebel fighter, the Y-wing in Star Wars lore is the Alliance's heavy attack bomber — older, slower, more heavily armed, and built around twin engine pods on a long central spine, with a small cockpit at the bow and a turret-mounted ion cannon. Y-wings flew alongside X-wings in the trench-run attack on the original Death Star and continued in service as a heavy strike platform across the saga.

The Y-wing's design — credited again to ILM concept artist Joe Johnston (along with the X-wing) — has the visual aesthetic of a "stripped down" maintenance-heavy Rebel fighter, with exposed conduits, modular hull plating, and the kind of utilitarian appearance that distinguishes it from the X-wing's cleaner lines. The aesthetic has become known as the "used universe" look, and the Y-wing is one of its most-cited examples.

This RC implementation is a novelty scale model in the same fan-tribute tradition that has produced flying RC X-wings, TIE fighters, Millennium Falcons, and assorted other Star Wars craft over the decades. The Y-wing's two-engine-pod configuration translates more directly to a flyable RC airframe than the X-wing's split-wing geometry, making the Y-wing relatively practical to construct as a working RC model.

In the simulator

A novelty subject for fans of fictional aviation. The Y-wing in our sim flies as a sport airframe, capturing the visual character of one of Star Wars's most recognized supporting craft. Use it for novelty flying with science-fiction visual signature. A natural sibling of the X-wing in this same pack.
