The Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane first flew on May 9, 1962. The unmistakable spine-and-tail-boom configuration with the cockpit perched at the front leaves the underside of the fuselage open for the heavy-lift external loads the Skycrane was designed to carry. Erickson Air-Crane acquired manufacturing rights from Sikorsky in 1992 and has continued to operate and refurbish the type, particularly for aerial firefighting where the Skycrane's enormous water-drop capacity is unmatched.
